ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS

Optical Coherence Tomography

OCT is a simple, painless eye scan that gives your ophthalmologist a detailed view of the retina and optic nerve.

A patient rests her chin on an OCT scanner while a doctor reviews the retinal scan on screen. A diagram of the eye shows the thin slice the scan captures.

ABOUT THE SCAN

What is OCT?

Think of it as a high-resolution cross-sectional scan of the eye.

Unlike a routine photograph of the retina, OCT can show the different layers beneath the retinal surface and detect very small changes.

WHY IT’S DONE

Why is OCT done?

OCT helps in the early detection, diagnosis and monitoring of several eye conditions, including:

Glaucoma

Evaluates the optic nerve and retinal nerve fibre layer.

Diabetic eye disease

Detects retinal swelling and other changes.

Macular disorders

Evaluates the central retina responsible for detailed vision.

Retinal conditions

Helps identify and monitor structural changes.

Optic nerve disorders

Provides detailed structural information.

YOUR VISIT

What happens during an OCT scan?

You simply look at a target inside the OCT machine while the scan is taken. There is usually no contact with the eye.

THE SCAN IS

Quick

Painless

Non-invasive

No radiation

WHY IT MATTERS

Why is OCT important?

Some eye diseases can cause subtle structural changes before significant symptoms or vision loss occur. OCT allows your ophthalmologist to see these changes in much greater detail and compare them over time.
